The deadline for applying for scholarships and Higher Education Loans has been extended by one month, according to an announcement made on Wednesday by Ezekiel Machogu, Cabinet Secretary for Education. The new deadline is October 7, rather than the original September 7 date. The purpose of this extension is to accommodate the 112,468 students who have not yet applied for these loans and scholarships.
Ezekiel Machogu, the cabinet secretary for education, revealed in a statement that just 156,532 students have applied for University Fund scholarships and Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans as of September 5.
This figure only represents 60% of the students who were placed by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) based on their results in the KCSE exams in 2022.
The Cabinet Secretary urged all qualified students to submit formal loan and scholarship applications via the website for higher education finance.
He promised Kenyans that no student would be denied a spot in a university because they couldn’t afford the tuition. Soon after getting their admissions letters, candidates can access the platform and submit their applications.
A candidate for the KCSE in 2022 must be a Kenyan citizen in order to be considered for a scholarship or loan. The Ministry of Education decided to waive the necessity for an ID card, allowing applicants who lack IDs to use their birth certificates. As a result, the application deadline was extended.
In addition to having a working email address and a phone number that is registered in their name, applicants must also have their KCPE and KCSE index numbers from the appropriate examination years.

Additionally, prospective students must submit a copy of their secondary school sponsorship letter and their letter of admission from their college or university, if applicable. In the event that a parent has died away, applicants must additionally include information about their parents and legal guardians, including a death certificate.
A new government funding mechanism divides candidates into three groups. Students who are vulnerable and in great need are given full government financing in the form of loans and scholarships.
93% of the cost of tuition is covered by the government for both needy and less-needy students. Students with the financial means must pay for their education entirely out of pocket.
