Higher Education Fund Provides Information On Applications Made

Only 4000 students have requested loans through the recently launched Higher Education Financing (HEF) site.

In an interview with Citizen Tv on Wednesday, Charles Ringera, CEO of HELB, asserted that the government has put the appropriate protections in place to ensure that no student is turned away from the funding program.

All KCSE candidates who enroll in colleges and TVET programs after 2022 are qualified for the scholarships and loans.

Government-sponsored loans and scholarships will provide complete assistance to more than 45,000 university students and 42,000 TVET students who are deemed vulnerable and in desperate need.

Ringera stated, “We are organized and ready to put the required protections in place for students who want to apply for and get loans at Helb board.

The deadline for submitting scholarship and loan applications is one month.

Time is not a concern because we are using an artificial intelligence method. As a result, we will have enough left enough to handle the student application forms. We want to reassure Kenyans that financial preparations have been taken by the government, said Ringera.

After gathering all the information and learning how much money will be granted to everyone, the government will disperse the monies during the first week that students are required to report to their particular universities.

In the budget for the preceding fiscal year, Helb’s funding was increased from Sh15 billion to Sh30 billion in 2023–24.

In May, Ruto made it clear that the new model wouldn’t lead to higher university tuition prices and stated that the government would increase the financing provided to educational institutions.

According to the president, the new strategy would divide the students into three groups: the most disadvantaged, the least vulnerable, and those who might be eligible for funding.

The Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, announced during the portal’s launch that underprivileged students wouldn’t have to pay anything for the program’s expenses.

According to Machogu, youngsters from low-income parents would finally have equal access to higher education and TVET programs.
