KNEC is concerned about the poor enrollment in national exam

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has raised concerns over the low number of applicants signing up to take this year’s national exams.

Since the portal’s launch on February 1, according to Council Chief Executive Officer David Njengere, the number of candidates captured has remained low.

The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) registration process has reportedly begun for the 2023 exams.

“Registration is a crucial part of the exam administration process. In order to avoid the last-minute rush, I implore all head teachers and administrators to register the candidates as soon as possible.

Also, he begged parents to pay close attention to their children’s exam registration.

Parents should be interested in making sure their kids are registered, according to Njengere.

According to Njengere, students who wish to take this year’s national exams have two months in which to register with the Examination Council.

According to Njengere, “KNEC launched the portal for institutions to begin uploading of applicants’ data from February 1 which would expire on March 30, 2023” with relation to registration of candidates for the 2023 KCPE and KCSE.

Because this year’s administration of the KCPE and KCSE would be the final to use the 8-4-4 method, registration is crucial.

After that, the Competency-Based Curriculum’s 2-6-6-3 educational system will be used to administer all primary school exams (CBC).

Njengere added that KNEC has released registration guidelines to guarantee smooth registration and exam administration.

The head teachers of examination centers are responsible for registering legitimate, enrolled pupils who are moving on to the next grade in their respective schools with their correct information, including their correct spellings as shown on their birth certificates.

Ezekiel Machogu, the cabinet secretary for education, has issued a warning to parents registering students in grade Seven to take the KCPE exams.

This came about after it was discovered that some school administrators and parents were working together to unlawfully transfer and register Grade 7 pupils to take the KCPE.

Njengere stated that all head teachers and principals are required to download the necessary documents, complete them, and submit them in PDF format to the Council before the deadline.

Index numbers will be assigned to all candidates who have enrolled for both exams based on their school’s admissions register and not on their class standing.

KNEC has advised schools with less than 15 candidates to transfer their students to any registered location determined by the Sub County Director of Education to be close by.

According to KNEC norms, he said, “Examination centers with less than 30 candidates shall be held in examination centers to be identified by the Sub-County Directors.”

This includes inmates and people running for office privately.

Njengere further noted that SCDES and Heads of Institutions must use their examination centers’ log-in credentials to access into the site in order to capture information about the test centers and candidates.

Principals must upload candidates’ passport photographs, which must be 300 by 300 pixels in size, for the KCSE.

The hosting school will, however, keep its code during the registration of candidates, according to the council.

Candidates who register at several centers will be penalized for cheating on the exam.

New schools must present a valid registration certificate from the County Director of Education, a fully completed inspection questionnaire from the Sub-County Director of Education, and a fully completed application form from the school in order to register for this year’s examination.
