KNEC KCSE Grading System, Applied to Each Subject, 2023
In Kenya, the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) is the body in charge of directing the administration of the examinations taken at the end of secondary school. The grading of subjects is different for each subject and depends on a variety of elements; also, each subject has its own grading system.
Before we get into the grading system, it is imperative that we have a solid understanding of the letters that the KNEC employs to designate the various mean grades:
If a candidate does not turn in any work for any of their classes, they will be given an average grade of X.
If one or more of your subjects are dropped, you will automatically receive a mean grade of Y.
In the event that the prerequisites for taking the KCSE exam are not satisfied, the candidate will receive an average grade of U.
In the event that the prerequisite course requirements for the Teacher Education, Business, or Technical examinations are not fulfilled, the student will be assigned a mean grade of CRNM.
Results are still being tallied if you receive an overall grade of P.
- If you received a mean grade of W, it indicates that the test results are being withheld.
The method of awarding grades is distinct for each field of study and school level. The following is a breakdown of the topic codes, as well as the grades and points:
