KUPPET disagrees with SRC’s plan to thwart demands for teacher salaries.
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) is under fire from the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) for allegedly plotting to thwart teachers’ requests for increased pay and benefits.
Officials from the teachers’ union, led by their Secretary-General Akello Misori, were responding to reports that the SRC had raised house allowances for government employees in a local daily newspaper.
According to the report, Nairobi-based employees in Job Group A would now receive Kshs 3,750, up from Kshs 3,000 previously.
At a news conference on Wednesday, Akello Misori asserted that the so-called “new” allowances were not actually “new” and that the SRC had issued an out-of-date circular as part of a cunning plan to thwart teachers’ demands.
“The SRC has tried several techniques to thwart the union’s path since 2019 when we presented our final memorandum of demands to the TSC for the 2021–2025 CBA cycle,” claimed Akello Misori.
Additionally, he said that the union has suggested that house allowances for all job groups be adjusted to match the amounts that are currently given to teachers working in Nairobi.
He therefore reiterated his plea for similar action to be taken across the nation.
When questioned about the same, the SRC, however, denied that they had actually issued the circular.
“Please be advised that the story is false and inaccurate. According to the local newspaper, we have not published any circulars, according to Anthony Mwangi, the SRC’s head of corporate communications.
