This month, teachers could benefit greatly as a result of a protracted legal struggle. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has approved the 7% wage rise for teachers this month. Additionally, the 1.5% housing fund reduction will not apply to teacher wages.

An individual designated by High Court Judge Mugure Thande filed a petition on behalf of Sen. Okiya Omtatah of Busia. As a result, Thande decided not to overturn the orders suspending the 2023 Finance Act on July 12 of this year.

The deductions were previously planned to begin on July 1st of this month. The 2023 Finance Act stipulated this as necessary.

The deductions won’t affect government employees’ pay this month, though.

Thande claims that numerous petitions, including those from Busia senator Okiya Omtatah and others, have demonstrated their legitimacy. Additionally, it has been determined that if the orders are lifted, the public will suffer.

The judge further mandated that the file be sent to Chief Justice Martha Koome so that she might appoint a group of justices to hear the case and render a decision.

President William Ruto had already proposed a compensation increase of 7% to 10% for all teachers and other government employees. He claimed that the administration took this action to shield all civil employees from the challenging economic climate.

The instructors will benefit from a rise in net salary as well as an expansion of their borrowing power.
