More Than 67,000 Teachers Will Be Retooled By TSC For JSS
More than 67,000 teachers will receive new training from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on how to manage the first-ever Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) class, which is currently in Junior Secondary School (JSS) in Grade 7.
In accordance with a note from TSC, among the 67,000 teachers are 11,192 instructors who have lately been transferred by the Commission from primary schools to teach in JSS and have a mean KCSE score of C+ (Plus) or above.
There are 196 Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) who will work with the 2,235 teachers who were recruited for Special Needs Education (SNE) from 745 public primary schools among the 30,550 normal teachers who were hired in January 2023.
In addition, there will be 745 head teachers in SNE primary schools and 22,482 head teachers in normal primary schools as of September 2022. Reuben Mugwuku Nthamburi, the Commission’s Director of Quality Assurance and Standards, attested to this in a memo.
The internal memo, dated February 15, 2023, was sent to all county and regional directors of education for TSC.
Nthamburi wrote in the memo, “The purpose of this memo is to kindly request you to invite the TOTs recently retooled for teacher retooling, headteachers for both regular and SNE, three teachers from regular, teachers from special schools, units and integrated school, and teachers from private schools.
The memo states that beginning on March 13, 2023, and lasting through March 19, 2023, the instructors would receive new training on the CBC and Competence Based Assessment (CBA). This face-to-face training approach will take place in Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) and other chosen venues.
ToTs and Master Trainers will provide professional support as part of the retooling, and a training paradigm including head teachers and teachers of languages, sciences, mathematics, humanities, and technical disciplines will be used.
The Smart Cascade Model of Training, according to TSC, will involve a multi-agency approach with headteachers receiving training for three days, teachers receiving training from TOTs for six days, and the Master of Trainers being tasked with providing expert support during the retooling exercise. educators from non- and semi-arid regions
