Proposed Salary for New ECDE Teachers by County
The Council of Governors, under the direction of Anne Waiguru, has declared that it will look into the matter of ECDE teacher compensation and offer a plan to resolve the ongoing pay dispute.
Waiguru claimed that governors would work with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to create a fair and affordable pay system for ECDE instructors.
PROPOSALS FROM THE SALARIES AND REMUNERATION COMMISSION (SRC)
The SRC determined that the lowest cadre of ECDE instructors headquartered in Nairobi (Cluster 1) should get between Ksh 14,961 and Ksh 15,842 following a salary review for ECDE Certificate and Diploma teachers.
While individuals in Cluster 4 (other locations) ought to obtain Ksh 13,211 to Ksh 14,092.
In response, the SRC reiterated its prior position on the pay and perks of ECDE teachers in a clarification it released on January 13, 2023 in response to a request from county governments.
However, in their recommendations to all 47 governors, SRC suggested that the minimum and maximum salaries for ECDE teachers be set at KES 7,836 and KES 8,717, respectively, for the lowest-paid ECDE teachers (ECDE Teacher III, Certificate), and KES 15,224 and KES 19,090, respectively, for the highest-paid ECDE teachers (Senior ECDE Teacher I, Diploma).
Vihiga, Homa Bay, Kisii, and West Pokot counties have already said they will put the SRC’s recommendations into practice.
A news conference was held by the Kenyan Union of Pre-Primary Education Instructors (KUNOPPET), which rejected the SRC circular because it was divisive and denigrated ECDE teachers.
In accordance with the SRC circular, county administrations have already made public the wages and allowances they plan to offer ECDE teachers beginning in early 2022.
