The CEO of KICD responds to claims that the CBC curriculum is overloaded.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Professor Charles Ong’ondo, has responded to concerns that the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is overcrowded.

He informed the general public that the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) did not place any additional demands on students in Grade 7.

According to Ong’ondo, the content will still need to be covered at those levels in other courses in order to fulfill the aim of 45 hours of learning per week, even if some study areas are to be lowered.

The government was exploring learning spaces for JSS pupils, according to Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekial Machogu, who recently officiated the distribution of Grade 7 textbooks at the KICD campus.

According to CS Machogu, the government is aware of the different learning domains and will make efforts to ensure that it won’t burden students.

At the moment, the government has approved 12 compulsory learning areas and learners are expected to choose a maximum of two optional subjects.

Learners in JSS study the following subjects:

  • Mathematics
  • English
  • Kiswahili
  • Agriculture
  • Integrated Science
  • Health Education
  • Social Studies
  • Religious Education
  • Pre-Technical and Pre-Career Education
  • Business Studies
  • Life Skills
  • Sports and Physical Education

Additionally, students must select at least one and no more than two electives from the following categories: virtual arts, performing arts, home science, computer science, foreign language (French, German, Arabic), and indigenous sign language.

The KICD CEO claims that the JSS curriculum is extensive. It offers various extra disciplines and 12 learning areas. This gives students the opportunity to delve deeper and discover areas of interest before deciding on a particular career.

Additionally, he claimed that by adding a foreign language, students would be able to study integration and international relations.

Additionally, he claimed that the CBC is set up to let students to socialize through math, reading, and social studies in primary school, as well as early opportunities for interaction with others outside of their homes, in pre-primary.

The pre-vocational examination will be known as the Kenya Pre-Vocational Level Education Assessment, while the 12 core subjects and optional tests are referred to as the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment. Learners will be evaluated in nine different subjects here.

Both formative and summative evaluations will be done for the two categories (JSS and pre-vocational).

The results of the formative and summative assessments given at the end of grade nine (9) will be used to help determine where to send students for senior secondary school paths.

Ong’ondo further disclosed that the KICD is required to create curriculum and curriculum support materials, which are then assessed before being used by the intended audience.

He pleaded with all parties involved, including the representatives of the universities’ Academic Staff Union and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), to exercise patience because change always takes time to take effect.

He also urged individuals who berate the CBC, adding that the unions ought to shoulder any weight that may be placed on the organization.
