Update for University Students from HELB
HELB’s most recent update for college students. The Higher Education Loans Board (Helb) worked with Safaricom to establish a new mobile wallet that is included in its mobile money app, and as a result, beneficiaries can now access their loans using M-Pesa.
Additional loanee-focused features have been added to the platform, including access to periodic statements, loan application, repayment, and status checks.
The platform closely resembles the widely used mobile banking applications now offered.
Users with feature phones must call the *642# USSD code from any network in order to access the platform, while customers with the M-Pesa app loaded can utilize the Helb mini app in the “services” area.
After entering their phone number, recipients who have previously registered their phone numbers with Helb will then receive a code to activate their mini apps and generate a PIN for future access.
To link their phones and activate the little app, those who have not yet registered their cell numbers with Helb must provide a phone number that is registered with the same ID number as their Helb account.
Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom, praised the idea and stated that by making it simple for borrowers of Helb loans to handle their money, it will provide much-needed convenience.
We are honored to be Helb’s go-to partner in providing technologies that suit their clients’ increasing needs in a world that is steadily becoming more digital.
Through this partnership, we will develop and implement mobile and digital solutions that will make it simple for all beneficiaries to access and administer HELB funds and services on their mobile device.
Charles Ringera, the chief executive of Helb, said the action is consistent with a larger government initiative to digitize public services.
Higher education students now have a mobile wallet option thanks to a partnership between Helb and Safaricom, which will significantly improve how they use our services.
Mr. Ringera stated that the government’s commitment to digitise all government services will speed the nation’s digital transformation and boost digital competitiveness.
The platform was unveiled during the two-day Helb Universities Consultative Forum, which was taking place at the time in Naivasha.
Ringera revealed during the event that the financial institution had raised over Sh2.1 billion from outside sources since 2014, including trust funds, foundations, and development partners among others, in order to supplement government support.
As a result, more than 55,000 people who otherwise would not have gotten aid now do.
Helb’s plan to mobilize outside resources aimed to raise money from non-exchequer sources to boost government funding.
This project was started in 2013–2014. The official claims that Helb has supported more than 55,000 people who otherwise would not have continued to receive assistance by generating more than Sh2.1 billion from 40 partners.
