Upgraded ECDE Teachers’ Pay in Kenya, Each County
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has clarified the pay information for educators and caregivers working in the field of early childhood development and education (ECDE).
The minimum wage for ECDE instructors in Nairobi (Cluster 1) should be between Ksh 14,961 and Ksh 15,842, but it should be between Ksh 13,211 and Ksh 14,092 in other locations (Cluster 4).
This proposal considers the long-term viability and ability to pay the bills of county governments.
SRC asserts that it is untrue for reports to state that ECDE educators are paid less than the minimum wage mandated by law. For these studies, we used the instructors’ basic income rather than their gross compensation.
The Ministry of Education is pressing for increased pay for Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) instructors in spite of the Salary and Salary Commission’s call for a wage cut.
The SRC released an explanation of the salaries and benefits of ECDE teachers on January 13, 2023 in response to a request from county governments.
The SRC is now evaluating the salaries of all public employees, including ECDE teachers, as part of the third pay review cycle, which includes this action. In June 2023, results are anticipated.
The Permanent Secretary for Basic Education, Dr. Belio Kipsang, emphasized the crucial work that ECDE teachers perform at the pre-primary level, and he urged the Senate committee to speak with the SRC about increasing the teachers’ pay.
Dr. Kipsang urged the government to harmonize and create a one scheme of service for ECDE instructors throughout all counties in order to eliminate wage disparities between permanent and contract-based teachers. He thinks that high-quality ECDE can lower education costs by 15%.
“The work done by ECDE teachers cannot be compared to the other levels of education as they are the first to interact and induct every child into the school life journey,” the guy said.
The 2010 Kenyan Constitution established the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC), which has two main responsibilities. It is in charge of determining and assessing the pay for all State officers, first and foremost.
Second, it offers guidelines to the federal, state, and municipal governments regarding the pay and benefits for other public employees.
