Azimio advises KUCCPS to let 600,000 students apply for courses.

Azimio has requested that the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) provide KCSE graduates another chance to apply for admission to universities and colleges in 2022.

In order to give the more than 600,000 persons who were turned away a chance, Opiyo Wandayi, the leader of the minority party in the National Assembly, proposed that KUCCPS open the third review of courses.

“The future of more than 500,000 young people is now in jeopardy,” he continued. “The cost of application was set at Sh1,500 per application for a young person to be placed in a college, coupled with lack of information about the process.”

A statement from Wandayi claims that Kenyans have also expressed their shock and dismay over the expensive tuition and fee schedules at the country’s public colleges.

Of the 881,416 pupils that sat the KCSE exams in 2022, the government has confirmed that 600,000 did not apply to join colleges or other institutions.

Wandayi asserts that “the new classification of citizens has cunningly placed very few (29%) in the category of vulnerable and very needy people who will qualify for 100% support in scholarships and loans leaving the majority to struggle with large student loan debt and parental burden.”

He asserted that the so-called new finance model had trickily shifted the burden of paying for education from the government to parents and students through expensive loans.

It is official that people who do not fall into the disadvantaged or needy groups will pay up to 62% of the cost of their education because the government conveniently covers 28% of the cost.

He went on to clarify that the previous arrangement required parents to finance 20% of college expenses and the government to pay the other 80%.
